The ASCE-NCS and AWRA-NCRS are jointly hosting a presentation on “Building a Stormwater Flood Resilience Plan - Mapping to Mitigation” at the Virginia Tech Executive Briefing Center in Arlington. The presentation is given by Mr. Joel Kaatz, who is a National Technical Manager in Stormwater Resilience and co-lead of the Global Flood Risk and Stormwater Management Community of Practice for Arcadis. As a technical advisor and project manager, he specializes in stormwater resiliency assessments, using hydrologic and hydraulic models to adapt communities to increasing precipitation, both inland and as part of coastal flood protection.

Communities face stormwater flood risk driven by intensified precipitation, sea level rise, storm surge, urban development, and funding challenges. This presentation introduces a methodology for developing a Stormwater Flood Resilience Plan, providing a roadmap to assess this risk and implement optimal, equitable, and actionable flood mitigation solutions.

The tour will be led by nationally-recognized river ecologist, Jim Cummins (retired), who was instrumental in the restoration of the American Shad fishery to the Potomac River. Jim will talk about the early history of this stretch of the river, including George Washington’s skirting canal and construction of the C&O Canal. He’ll also talk about recent environmental history, including installation of the Little Falls fish passage.
