Please join us on Saturday morning, June 21st, for a guided walking tour along the Potomac River near Little Falls Dam. The tour will be led by nationally-recognized river ecologist, Jim Cummins (retired), who was instrumental in the restoration of the American Shad fishery to the Potomac River. After meeting up at the Sycamore Island public parking lot at 8:45 AM, the tour will begin on the C&O Canal towpath across from Sycamore Island at 9:15 AM and will continue along the towpath downstream to Little Falls Dam (approximately a 15 minute walk). Jim will talk about the early history of this stretch of the river, including George Washington’s skirting canal and construction of the C&O Canal. He’ll also talk about recent environmental history, including installation of the Little Falls fish passage. Finally, there will be a discussion of issues related to use of the river for DC metropolitan area water supply and the environmental flow-by at Little Falls Dam.
Professional Development Hour (PDH) certificates provided for attendance.
Registration is required by 5:00 pm on Wednesday, June 18, 2025
